Portland Oregon Christmas Ship Parade 2013

Portland’s Christmas Ships Parade
December 6 – 21, 2013

2013 marks the 59th year for the Christmas Ship Parade on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers in Portland, Oregon. Please click on the Willamette or the Columbia Schedule links for complete schedules with route details including viewing locations and times for restaurants, hotels and outdoor viewing.

The Christmas Ship Fleet averages about 55 to 60 boats between the two Columbia and Willamette River fleets. Both fleets will be out most every night for two weeks beginning December 6, 2013 and running nightly through December 21, 2013 (with the exception of Monday, December 9th, when the Christmas Ships will not run). The fleet will do a special performance in Camas, WA on Nov. 30th. As we are an all volunteer organization, not all the boats make it out every night, but we always seem to have enough enthused Captains to put on a lively parade.

Without donations from the restaurants and the hotels that are situated along the waterfront, this parade would not be possible. Please book your Christmas parties at our sponsoring restaurants and hotels. They are listed by viewing dates on the fleet schedule links with phone numbers and links to their websites. Their donations are used to pay the Christmas Ship, Inc. expenses for promoting and maintaining the organization. Each Christmas Ship skipper pays his own fuel costs and receives no money from the donations. Christmas Ships, Inc is a non-profit organization, and depends on your donations, and the donations from our supporting businesses, to keep this event alive in Portland and Vancouver.

Cyber Monday Shopping Online Buyer Beware:

th

Online Buyer Beware: E-Commerce Fraud Is Getting More Sophisticated

by Bruce Kennedy Nov 30th 2010 9:55AM
Updated Nov 30th 2010 12:13PM
DailyFinance
Cyber Monday Crackdown: Feds Bust Counterfeit E-Commerce Sales Sites The term Cyber Monday was coined only about five years ago — but that day of frenzied online shopping, coming on the heels of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, is already a major part of U.S. retail sales culture. The National Retail Federation estimates nearly 107 million Americans shopped on Cyber Monday this year — up about 10% from 2009. And an NRF survey released before Thanksgiving reported more than 88% of retailers were planning special Cyber Monday promotions.

It’s probably no coincidence, then, that the feds made a major announcement on Cyber Monday: They had seized 82 domain names of commercial websites they allege were engaged in the illegal sale and distribution of counterfeit goods and pirated copyrighted works.

According to a Department of Justice statement, the operation targeted bogus online retailers dealing in a wide spectrum of counterfeit goods, ranging from clothing and fashion accessories to sporting equipment, DVD sets, music and software. “By seizing these domain names, we have disrupted the sale of thousands of counterfeit items, while also cutting off funds to those willing to exploit the ingenuity of others for their own personal gain,” said U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder

According to the Justice Department, a lot of the counterfeit goods were shipped from suppliers in other countries directly into the U.S. via international express mail.

Cyber-Criminals Can Sucker Even Savvy Users

It’s not just retailers and intellectual property-holders being hurt by fraudulent online sites. “I would bet 5% of the websites being accessed [by consumers on Cyber Monday] are not legitimate,” says Paul Bauer, chair of the Department of Business Information and Analytics at the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business.

Internet criminals have become amazingly sophisticated, he says — even fooling people who consider themselves web-savvy when it comes to online shopping.

Bauer offers himself as an example. About a year ago, he was making his mortgage payment online. “Within five minutes of paying it,” he remembers, ” I get back this email saying there was a problem with it; would you please click here. And I did, initially. But then I went, wait a minute — that didn’t come from [my bank]. In fact, I checked the IP address, and it was not from [the bank]. Somebody was monitoring their website close enough — sitting on a router somewhere on the Internet — that they were then able to send back that email. I damn-near fell for it.”

Online fraudsters also set up up their fraud sites with Web addresses very similar to those of legitimate e-commerce sites, counting on the fact that consumers often mistype URLs. Another scheme is to redirect online shoppers to such bogus sites.

“They can set up the same level of security with certificates, so everything will look legitimate,” says Bauer, “but the fact is that you aren’t where you thought you were, [and that] exposes you to credit card theft.”

The best thing online consumers can do is remain vigilant to potential fraud and watch where they shop. “Buyer beware,” says Bauer. “There are bad guys out there, everywhere, trying to take your money. We haven’t been able to design [the Internet] to shut that down completely. But this bust, taking away 82 domains, is a step in the right direction.”

How to Claim Your Energy Tax Credits

Main_St_1

Energy tax credits on select improvements available through end of 2013.
Published: January 23, 2012
By: Donna Fuscaldo

The feds have resurrected, through 2013, $500 tax credits for energy-efficient home improvements. If you upgraded one or more of the following systems, you may be eligible to take a tax credit on your return.

Biomass stoves
Heating, ventilation, air conditioning
Insulation
Roofs (metal and asphalt)
Water heaters (non-solar)
Windows, doors, and skylights
Storm windows and doors

The energy tax credits are small, but at least a credit is better than a deduction:
Deductions just reduce your taxable income.

With a credit, you get a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your tax liability: If you get the $500 credit, you pay $500 less in taxes.

Limits on IRS energy tax credits besides $500 max
Credit only extends to 10% of the cost (not the 30% of yesteryear), so you have to spend $5,000 to get $500.

$500 is a lifetime limit. If you pocketed $500 or more in 2009, 2010, and 2011 combined, you’re not entitled to any more money for energy-efficient improvements in the above seven categories. But if you took $300 back then, for example, you can get up to $200 in 2012.
With some systems, your cap is even lower than $500.

No matter how much you spend on some approved items, you’ll never get the $500 credit — though you could combine some of these:

System New windows $200 max (and no, not per window—overall)

Advanced main air-circulating fan $50 max

Qualified natural gas, propane, or oil furnace or hot water boiler $150 max

Approved electric and geothermal heat pumps; central air-conditioning systems; and natural gas, propane, or oil water heaters $300 max

And not all products are created equal in the feds’ eyes. Improvements have to meet IRS energy-efficiency standards to qualify for the tax credit. In the case of boilers and furnaces, they have to meet the 95 AFUE standard. EnergyStar.gov has the details.

Tax credits cover installation — sometimes

Rule of thumb: If installation is either particularly difficult or critical to safe functioning, the credit will cover labor. Otherwise, not. (Yes, you’d have to be pretty handy to install your own windows and roof, but the feds put these squarely in the “not covered” category.)

Installation covered for:
Biomass stoves
HVAC

Non-solar water heaters

Installation not covered for:
Insulation
Roofs
Windows, doors, and skylights

How to claim the energy tax credit
Determine if the system you installed is eligible for the credits. Go to Energy Star’s website for detailed descriptions of what’s covered; then talk to your vendor. The site may not have been updated by the Department of Energy.
Save system receipts and manufacturer certifications. You’ll need them if the IRS asks for proof.

File IRS Form 5695 with the rest of your tax forms in 2012.

What Is Hard Water?

Home Remodeler Blog

Image

The elements that generally cause hard water are calcium and magnesium. They often show up in the form of a green and white build-up on faucets or spots on dishes from the dishwasher. While some people claim to dislike soft water and feel they can endure without a water softener, your water heater, hot water pipes and plumbing fixtures do not have the same type of endurance. Replacing these items can be very costly and the main objective of a water softening system is to preserve the life expectancy of your home’s plumbing system.

Of course, there are other benefits to having soft water. Soft water rinses cleaner from your hair, skin and clothes, minimizing unwanted residue. You’ll use less soap for washing dishes, laundry and bathing as most soaps are made for use in soft water and lather much more quickly.

5 Ways to Make a Home Extra Cozy This Winter without Paying a Fortune

fireplace1

By Melissa Dittmann Tracey, REALTOR(R) Magazine
On November 11, 2013, in Helpful Tools, by Melissa Tracey

With cooler temperatures, home owners will want to keep a home inviting and cozy, especially if they’re trying to sell it.

But just cranking up the heat can prove costly — particularly this year. Heating costs are on the rise, and more than 90 percent of homes will likely face higher heating expenses during this year’s cold season, according to the Energy Department. For example, households using natural gas will likely see bills 13 percent higher this year than last, paying on average $679 for heat this season.

So what are some quick, affordable ways to keep a home warm? A free, new ebook, “The Cure for the Common Cold Room: A Safe & Smart Home Heating Guide,” by ElectricFireplacesDirect.com offers up numerous tips and tricks to home owners and sellers for keeping a home warm this winter. Here are a few ideas from the book:

1. Add area rugs: Hardwood and tile floors can make your home feel cold in the winter. Add some area rugs to provide a warmer barrier between your feet and the floor. Non-skid utility rugs or rubber mats can make kitchen floors more comfortable and safe, according to the ebook.

2. Set ceiling fans to run clockwise: Yes, a ceiling fan can be used in the winter months too and can even help heat your home. The majority of ceiling fans have two settings: Counterclockwise cools rooms in the summer and clockwise can force warm air downward in the winter. Look for a small switch on the ceiling fan to change its direction clockwise for the cooler months.

3. Rearrange furniture: Check the arrangement of the furniture in the home to make sure it’s cozy. Often times, home owners spread out furniture to fill an entire room. Instead, group pieces together to get a warmer feel. Move furniture away from the windows and doors and closer to the fireplace, if there is one in the home.

4. Add moisture to the air: Humid air feels warmer than dry air. Therefore, a humidifier may make a difference. Cool mist and warm mist humidifiers can both be effective in making rooms feel warmer. “A cool mist humidifier is safer — and usually less expensive — because it doesn’t expel hot water or steam vapor that could hurt children or pets,” according to the book.

5. Let the sun shine inside: Use the sun to heat your home by adjusting the home’s curtains to let the sun in. Open south-facing curtains on sunny days. Also, be sure to close curtains at night to provide an extra barrier against wintery winds that are trying to squeeze inside the home.

9 Ways to Avoid Gobbling Up Energy on Thanksgiving

thCA4U3BRH

Published: November 12, 2012
By: Courtney Craig

Wasting energy on Thanksgiving? Don’t be a turkey.

A few days before Thanksgiving

1. Install a dimmer switch for the dining room chandelier. Every time you dim a bulb’s brightness by 10%, you’ll double the bulb’s lifespan. Most CFLs don’t work with dimmers, but you can create mood lighting with incandescents and LEDs. The dimmer switch will cost you about $10.

2. Plan side dishes that can cook simultaneously with the turkey. If you cook dishes at the same temperature at the same time, you’ll reduce the amount of time the oven has to be running — it’s easier for the cook and saves energy, too.

When you start cooking

3. Lower your house thermostat a few degrees. The oven will keep the house warm. You also can turn on your ceiling fan so it sucks air up, distributing heat throughout the room.

4. Use ceramic or glass pans — you can turn down the oven’s temp by up to 25 degrees and get the same results. That’s because these materials retain heat so well, they’ll continue cooking food even after being removed from the oven.

5. Use your oven’s convection feature. When heated air is circulated around the food, it reduces the required temperature and cooking time. You’ll cut your energy use by about 20%.

6. Cook in the microwave whenever possible. Ditto slow cookers. Microwaves get the job done quickly, and although slow cookers take much longer, they still use less energy than the oven. Resist the urge to peek inside your slow cooker: Each time you remove the lid, it releases heat and can add about 25 minutes of cooking time to your dish.

7. Use lids on pots to retain heat. The food you’re cooking on the stovetop will heat up faster when you use lids.

When it’s cleanup time

8. Scrape plates instead of rinsing with hot water. Unless food is really caked on there, your dishwasher should get the dishes clean without a pre-rinse. Compost your non-meat food waste. Check out these other Thanksgiving clean-up tips.

9. Use your dishwasher. It saves energy and water, so only hand-wash things that aren’t dishwasher-safe. Wait until you’ve got a full load before starting the dishwasher. Be sure to stop the appliance before the heated dry cycle; just open the door and let your dishes air-dry.
