OREGON COAST FAMILY FRIENDLY CAMPING DESTINATIONS

Beverly Beach State Park

Beverly Beach is popular for a reason! Like magic, a well-known walkway goes under the highway and emerges to the long expanse of sandy beach extending from Yaquina Head (you can see the lighthouse from here) to the headlands of Otter Rock. When the weather cooperates, kites color the air and whip in the wind. Bring a bucket and build a sand castle! Surfers often head to the north beach, while folks looking for fossils head south.

Cape Lookout State Park

Cape Lookout State Park can be reached by traveling an hour and a half west of Portland through the scenic Wilson River pass. Along the way stop and enjoy waterfalls, scenic views and some great fishing.

A popular campground and day-use area, Cape Lookout is located on a sand spit between Netarts Bay and the ocean, giving you a terrific view of the ocean with easy access to the beach. Beachcombing is popular here, and the park is reputedly a good place to find glass floats. More than eight miles of hiking and walking trails wind through a lush old-growth forest. The Cape Lookout trail follows the headland for more than two miles. A bench is located at the end of the trail. Enjoy the view! You might see a whale or two along with other wildlife.

                                                                    Fort Stevens State Park
Steeped in history, Fort Stevens brings new meaning to an educational vacation.  After retracing the steps of our military past, you can enjoy everything else this park has to offer. Whether swimming in a freshwater lake, or cruising along miles of hiking and biking trails, big memories are guaranteed.

Jessie M. Honeyman State Park

If you’ve never jumped over the edge of a sand dune before, you need to add this campground to your camping bucket list.  Your little sand crabs will love digging away, while your older risk takers will be thrilled to leap over the end of a dune and come sailing down feet first into the warm sand.

Get To Know Oregon Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge Flook Lake

Diversity in habitat creates variety in wildlife. Hart Mountain Refuge’s diverse landscape and habitat are alive with over 300 species of wildlife, primarily birds (239) species) and mammals (42 species). Mammals such as pronghorn, deer, coyotes, kangaroo rats, marmots, bobcats, ground squirrels, and rabbits are generally year-round residents of the refuge while most birds come and go with the seasons. Reptiles include rattlesnakes, bull snakes, yellow-bellied racers, and sagebrush lizards.

Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge is located on a massive fault block ridge that ascends abruptly nearly three-quarters of a mile above the Warner Valley floor in a series of rugged cliffs, steep slopes, and knife-like ridges. Visitors experience spectacular views of the beautiful Warner Valley Wetlands while ascending the west side entrance road to headquarters. The west face of the mountain is cut by several deep gorges. Hart, Potter, and DeGarmo canyons, the most rugged, extend from the valley floor to the top of the main ridge. The east side of the mountain is less precipitous, descending in a series of rolling hills and low ridges to the sagebrush-grasslands typical of southeastern Oregon and the Great Basin.

The rugged diversity of the terrain creates a rich mix of habitat types, home to more than 300 species of wildlife. Featured species include pronghorn antelope, California bighorn sheep, mule deer, sage grouse, and redband trout. The 278,000-acre refuge is one of the most expansive wildlife habitats in the arid West free of domestic livestock.

Since its creation in 1936 as a range for remnant herds of pronghorn antelope, management of the refuge has broadened to include conservation of all wildlife species characteristic of this high desert habitat and restoration of native ecosystems for the public’s enjoyment, education, and appreciation.

Getting There . . . Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge is located 65 miles northeast of Lakeview, Oregon, off Highway 140.

From Lakeview, where the Sheldon-Hart Mountain Complex office is located in the Post Office Building, take U.S. Highway 395 North about 5 miles. Turn right on Oregon State Highway 140 and go east 15 miles, then turn left at the sign to the refuge. Go 19 miles to Plush and continue through Plush, then turn right at the sign to the refuge. Follow the Hart Mountain Road to the refuge headquarters.

From Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, go south on Oregon State Highway 205 through Frenchglen and continue another 10 miles, then turn west (right) at the sign to the refuge. Travel 36 miles to the refuge headquarters.

Flook Lake

A moderate hike leads to the petroglyph canyon at Flook Lake.

I suggest warming up, though, with an easier walk to the better known rock art of Petroglyph Lake.

If you go, be warned that there are no actual trails in this part of the high desert. Only rough roads lead to the starting points for these walks, and they’re about as far from civilization as you’ll find in Oregon. Although rain is rare, the treeless landscape is often raked by windstorms, lightning, blazing heat and snow flurries. The best weather is perhaps in May and June, when wildflowers join the sagebrush.

A good base for your explorations is Hart Mountain’s Hot Springs Campground, with free campsites in a creekside oasis of quaking aspen. The hot springs are also free, with a natural rock pool shielded by low rock masonry walls.

Get to Know Oregon Trappist Abbey in Oregon Wine Country

Trappist Abbey in Oregon Wine Country

In Yamhill County, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Trappist Abbey, it is more!

The Abbey’s connection to Oregon’s wine story is unique! Father Richard Layton explained that they do not grow grapes or make wine at the Abbey, but they store the bottled wine, thousands and thousands of cases of wine – on pallets that soar to the ceiling.

“We are an order of contemplative prayer and meditation,” said Father Layton. “We don’t work in parishes or schools or hospitals – that’s why our means of support are rather odd compared to other religious orders.”

More than 130 Oregon wineries store their wines inside a 40,000-square-foot warehouse. Father Layton added that the space is critical to wineries that must keep their products safe and secure:

“We are exactly what the wine industry needs in Oregon: warehouse space – and that was true back in 1991 when we started storing wines for a handful of wineries – we had the electricity, the ventilation and air condition and furnaces to keep the space a constant 60 degrees.”

The Abbey offers even more service to the wine industry: machinery that labels the wine bottles too.

Wine technician Jennifer Blanco explained: “We have so many wineries in the Willamette Valley that store with us and many take advantage of our labeling services. We could have a couple hundred in a year!”

Blanco added with a chuckle, “It’s also a really great workout because you’re lifting cases of wine all day long.”

And there’s more to this remarkable story – the Trappist Abbey’s has a bakery that turns out fruit cakes and date nut cakes that are world famous and based upon prized recipes that were created in the early 80s.

Father Richard said their weekly production keeps up with demand.

“About 1,000 cakes – one pound cakes – and we shrink wrap each and put them into boxes that go into our walk in cooler – they are sent out or stored for the holiday season.”

The Abbey’s 1,400 acres of mixed Doug Fir forest and Oak Savannah offer miles of hiking trails with stunning views. It is The sort of place that is perfect for getting away from it all – and you can.

“We do have retreat units and people are able to make a 1 or 2 day retreat or a week-long retreat. They are able to go to the chapel and listen to the monks chant and on a beautiful day like today it’s a great place to be. A lot of silence, a lot of solitude – that’s what the grounds have to offer here.”

Visit Travel Oregon for an extended version of this story and to see past versions of Grant’s Getaways.
